Проверьте с помощью следующего кода:
sudo apt-get install python-software-properties python g++ make
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:chris-lea/node.js
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nodejs
npm install
проверить версию,
npm -v
вывод будет таким
1.4.28
После запуска команды
sudo apt-get install aptitude
затем
sudo aptitude install npm
